DETROIT RENAISSANCE || PHOENIX HOOPS

The Phoenix are back for another great season!!!! The 2011 – 2012 squad is returning 4 starters including 6’5 Jonathan Sutherlin, 6’5 Stephen Herrod, 5’9 PG Jalen Sims and 6’0 Junior Guard Clark Bishop.
Junior Clark Bishop led the team in scoring last season averaging 14 points per game including 20 points or more in 3 out of the last 4 games.
Senior Guard Jalen Sims has been starting for Renaissance for 2 seasons, playing Varsity for 3 and is looking finish his HS career with a bang.
Sutherlin and Herrod are looking to have breakout seasons as well. Both are long (6’5), athletic and can have an impact on both sides of the ball.
Other key players include: Seniors – Avery Turner, Jerome Wheeler, and Phil Boone. Juniors – Oge Oniwudiwe, Quincy Norman and Devin McKissic. Sophomore James Murray adds depth to the Phoenix back court also.

Phoenix Junior Varsity wins PSL City Championship!!

Sophomore Tre Jordan, a 6-3 forward-center, scored 26 points and sophomore Ed Bauman and freshman Corey Wheeler added 16 and 13 points, respectively, to lead Renaissance past Pershing 71-66 Monday in the Detroit Public School League boys’ junior varsity basketball championship game at Western International High School.Sophomore Kevin Clemens had nine points for Coach Yusuf Sabree’s victorious Phoenix, while Pershing’s Dougboys, who reached the finals after Cass Tech forfeited a 70-61 semifinal victory because of an ineligible player, was led by sophomore Daniel Dwywer wth 17 points, sophomore Kameron Barden with 11 and sophomore Marion Campbell with 10.

After Two blowout victorties… Phoenix are Westside Champs!!!!

This group of seniors has accomplished something that hasn’t been done since the days of Malik Hairston & Joe Crawford…. GO UNDEFEATED IN PSL LEAGUE PLAY!!!!
After beating Western (73-29) & Southwestern (74-40) the Phoenix have won 9 straight PSL West games and take the #1 seed of the westside into the PSL Playoffs.

Phoenix stay undefeated, clinch 1st place in PSL West beat Cody 63-54

Traveling on the road is always tough in the PSL. After beating a tough Ford team at home, the Phoenix were looking to claim sole control of the westside at Cody.
Renaissance jumped out on Cody 14-4 in the 1st quarter, controlling the tempo of the contest. However, Cody is always tough at home and make a run to cut the lead down and trailed by only one at halftime 29-28.
The third quarter is where the Phoenix made their statement. Holding Cody to just 5 points in the quarter, their defense kept Cody from taking the lead and ended up controlling the contest. Renaissance continued to gets stops going into the 4th and with :30 seconds remaining held a 16 point lead, 62-46 and end up winning 63-54.
Clark Bishop led Renaissance with 17 points. Senior Phillip Boone added 14 points and Jonathan Sutherlin had 10 points and 8 rebounds.
Phoenix win Maroon Madness!!! Beat Ford 58-50 and remain in 1st place

The crowd was packed…. The energy and intensity was at a high level… Thats what happens everytime Ford and Renaissance battle in the PSL West!!! The Phoenix jumped out on Ford 19-9 in the 1st quarter but Ford would battle back to cut the lead to six by halftime.
The 2nd half was much of the same, with the Phoenix controlling the majority of the game. Ford would make a run in the 4th to take the lead by 1 with 3 minutes to play. Tough baskets by Clark Bishop (21 pts) and Jonathan Elrod (12 pts) along with some clutch free throws helped the Phoenix pull out the victory.
Jonathan Sutherlin had one of his best performances of the season with 14 pts, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. Kendahl Amerson (Ford) had 17 pts before fouling out. The Phoenix claim sole possession of 1st place and have a very good chance at winning the PSL West League.
Phoenix win 4 out of last 5 games… Still 1st in PSL West
With wins over Grosse Pointe Liggett, North Farmington, Northwestern and Detroit City, the Detroit Renaissance Phoenix are playing some very good basketball this season. With great solid team defense, the Phoenix are holding opponenets under 60 pts per game.
Junior Clark Bishop is leading the team in scoring at 16 pts per game. Stephod Herrod and Jonathan Sutherlin are playing very solid inside, controlling the paint and finishing at the basketball. Click here for season stats.
Phoenix are going into the biggest game of the year against Henry Ford on Jan. 21st for 1st place in the PSL West. Both teams are undefeated in league play.
The Phoenix stay atop PSL West with 59-56 win over Mumford in OT
The PSL West division is a battle at the top!!! The Phoenix were looking to use their momentum from beating Cass Tech earlier in the week against Mumford.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 22-8 lead and were looking good… That was until the Phoenix got warmed up… Renaissance ended up taking a one point lead at halftime 29-28. The second half was like a championship boxing match with each team going on runs and making plays. The Phoenix pulled out a tough one in overtime to remain 3-0 in the PSL West, tied for first with Henry Ford. Clark Bishop had 21 pts and Stephen Herrod added 12 pts and 8 rebs.
Renaissance edges out Cass Tech 63-61 in thriller
The Phoenix (3-1, 2-0) were looking to take advantage of their momentum rolling into this contest. After beating CMA by 41 points, the Phoenix thought they had a good shot at playing well aginast Cass Tech.
They did just that… Behind Junoir Guard Clark Bishop, who scored 25 points in the contest and Senior Stephen Herrod with 12 points and 8 rebounds. The Technicians put up one heck of fight however… Dre Johnson gave the Phoenix fits with 29 points but Renaissance prevailed in the end. Highlights of the game are below.
Phoenix fight hard but come up short, lose 41-40
If Tuesday Decemeber 13th, 2011 taught the Phoenix anything is that the PSL is a battle!!! After starting the game off down 10 in the 1st quarter, the Phoenix fought back and tied the score at 21 at halftime.
The tight battle continued all the way into the 4th with both teams battling. With 43 seconds and the ball, the Phoenix miss two key free throws and Douglass comes down to convert an and 1 to take the lead. Last attempts by the Phoenix rim out and Douglass holds off the Phoenix barely 41-40 at home.
Oge Onwudiwe led the Phoenix with 9 points and Stephen Herrod had 8 points and 10 rebounds.
Martez Asberry had 16 for Douglass.
Phoenix get 1st win!!! 69-44 over Lathrup
Phoenix Hoops was definitely trying to make a statement on 12/11/11 at Country Day against Southfield Lathrup.
The Phoenix played together and managed to keep a scrappy Chargers team under 50 points with some really good team defense.
